Infrastructure migration from AWS to DigitalOcean

AWS provides a lot of fine-grained services and tools that developers & devops can use to implement faster compared to other cloud platforms. That is very useful for the users, but comes at a cost for the startup, literally.

Let's compare two virtual machines from both providers:

General Purpose - Current Generation

Region: EU Frankfurt | 8 vCPU | 32 GB RAM

  • AWS: $0.46 * 24 hours * 30 days = $331.2
  • DO: $160

Compute Optimized - Current Generation

Region: EU Frankfurt | 16 vCPU | 32 GB RAM

  • AWS: $0.776 * 24 hours * 30 days = $558.72
  • DO: $320

As you can see, the cost is half the price on DigitalOcean, but AWS offers many granular services and tools that would save a lot of time implementing it ourselves.

What next?

We implemented our infrastructure and applications in a cloud-agnostic fashion, so when the time came, we could switch easily. Given that the time has come due to financial reasons, we have decided that this month we will migrate to DigitalOcean and we are glad to announce that we completed the process today :-)

Below you can see our entire fleet:

Virtual Machines - PROD environment
Virtual Machines - DEV, STAGING, PROD environments
Virtual Machines #2 - DEV, STAGING, PROD environments
Databases & Spaces - LOCAL, DEV, STAGING, PROD environments
DNS Management

We are happy to say that everything is working smooth and the migration was a success. Regarding the financial costs of running on DO, we are covered for the next year, so no worries about that :-)

Happy new year!
